The Befriending Our Defenses workshop is experiential and action-focused. The workshop utilizes components of Psychodrama/Sociodrama, Mindfulness, Compassion, and communication strategies that teach participants to recognize their defenses and how those defenses impact their communication and relationships. Participants will then learn to utilize the gifts that exist within those defenses to be effectively responsive, rather than ineffectively reactive. This workshop will give participants examples of how to utilize these methods in their own clinical practice with individuals, couples, or groups. The Befriending Our Defenses method will teach participants how to increase their clients’ awareness and intentional communication by building intra and inter personal connection and skills. These strategies also help to inform clinicians of their own defensive structures and use mindfulness strategies to manage counter-transference with clients.

Learning Objectives of the Befriending Our Defenses workshop include:

· Participants will be able to identify four major defenses and their effective communication counterparts (gifts).

· Participants will learn how to apply the Befriending Our Defenses model and technique with individual, couples and group clients.

· Participants will learn action-oriented techniques that create a safe and cohesive environment for working with clients exploring their own defenses.
