This workshop combines the use of sandplay figures as an expressive tool for the unconscious and action methods to embody learning and change. Figures are used in sand tray to construct unconscious realities and potentials that exist within the psyche, in such a way as to allow for safe and informative examination. Action Methods encourage an embodied experience that results in deeper understanding and change.
Learning Objectives of the BUILDING RESOURCES workshop include:
Participants will be able to understand, describe, and utilize sandplay figures with clients to access a variety of unconscious beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and desires.
Participants will be able to apply the use of sandplay figures in one specific technique to access internal resources, as well as other uses.
Participants will learn how to apply the action method of doubling with clients to utilize in 1-3 different ways, including to express and embody resources.

Gia has been a practicing therapist for over 18 years, with experience working in agency, higher education and private practice settings. She was a tenured counseling-faculty member at CSU, Bakersfield and an adjunct instructor in the Master’s in Education/Counseling program. She currently has a private practice in Sacramento. She works and teaches from a combination of Psychodynamic, Depth Psychology, Somatic, Psychodrama/Sociodrama, and Mindfulness perspectives, integrating art, sand tray, spirituality and nature.
Virginia “Gia” Herndon is approved by the California association of marriage and family therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. Gia Herndon, LMFT maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.
