This workshop explores Carl Jung’s theory of personality with specific focus on the Shadow. We will explore the Shadow by first identifying personal Archetypes and the “transcendent function” utilizing an expressive arts technique and self-compassion inquiry to cultivate wholeness.  Shadow explorations is particularly helpful in assisting in recognizing and managing counter-transference. (3 CEUs)

Learning Objectives of the Exploring Shadow Through Archetype workshop include:

  • Participants will be able to define and understand 2-3 structures of Jung’s theory of personality.

  • Participants will be able to define and apply Jung’s concept of the Transcendent Function.

  • Participants will learn how to use an expressive arts technique to explore their own shadow and how it may manifest on counter-transference.

  • Participants will be able to utilize concepts and the expressive arts technique to assist clients in facing challenging aspects of their own personality.

Gia has been a practicing therapist for over 18 years, with experience working in agency, higher education and private practice settings. She was a tenured counseling-faculty member at CSU, Bakersfield and an adjunct instructor in the Master’s in Education/Counseling program. She currently has a private practice in Sacramento. She works and teaches from a combination of Psychodynamic, Depth Psychology, Somatic, Psychodrama/Sociodrama, and Mindfulness perspectives, integrating art, sand tray, spirituality and nature.

Virginia “Gia” Herndon is approved by the California association of marriage and family therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. Gia Herndon, LMFT maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.
